Today is Epiphany — at least by the Western Christian reckoning. Not a date widely observed in Japan by any means. But for a growing number of patissiers in Tokyo, especially those with French connections, it's a chance to promote a new and highly delectable seasonal specialty: Galettes des Rois.
In my Sweet Inspirations column the other day, I introduced a few places in Tokyo where they are available (most of them until around the 10th of this month). Here are a few more images.
Starting with the Viron stores (Marunouchi and Shibuya). They are offering the gallettes in three different sizes. This was the advance publicity…
And this was the real deal, including a great selection of fèves — though you pay extra for them…
And this is the window display in Dalloyau's tony Ginza store, featuring its alternative specialty, "Galette ō Fruit Rouges" [sic].
As mentioned, a few of the other locations where you can find them in Tokyo include Gontran Cherrier in Shibuya and Joel Robuchon (various stores).
Even Kinokuniya too is getting into the act too (though I don't think much of the fève)…
But the king of the Galettes des Roi in Tokyo for another year is the superb offering from Sadaharu Aoki.
I blogged about it this time last year, but that needn't stop me from revisiting this delicious offering — one of the best crossover (French/Japanese) cakes in existence.
