I'd only vaguely heard of Kinfolk before this past weekend. But the opportunity to hang out in Hayama, a very favourite stretch of the coast, learning about and eating good fish was too good to miss — especially as it was going to be at Griot.
Kinfolk is based in Portland OR, publishes a very beautiful food/lifestyle magazine, and has an affiliated bicycle company. It also organizes one-off local get-togethers (you could call them pop-ups) that involve people coming together to learn and eat and enjoy each others' company. A very fine idea.
Griot is the funky little downhome space — formerly (and soon to be again) an aromatic Moroccan/ Spanish/African restaurant and catering company — run by dynamic chef and cooking teacher Kurumi Arimoto. It was she who welcomed us, then led us down to meet the fisherman. And on our return cooked the meal that we sat down to enjoy.
