As mentioned, the OPENharvest pop-up in Shibuya on Tuesday was so much fun, we couldn't miss out on the next day's event.
The venue was Ichi Fuji, a tiny yakitori counter in the heart of Omoide Yokocho, that small block of retro Shinjuku more commonly known as Shomben Yokocho (Piss Alley). As traditional as it comes, Ichi Fuji consists of a single counter big enough for a dozen at a squeeze, with a small room up some very steep stairs for the spill-over crowd.
And the theme was Mexican — probably the first time that tacos and margaritas have ever been served up in this funky, atmospheric (and greasy and grubby) neighbourhood better known for rotgut sake and shochu.
In charge of the food department was Jerome of Chez Panisse: he serves up a fine taco. This was the fish version (he was also making them with pork)...
The margaritas weren't too shabby either...
They were made with halves of roasted sudachi, with shredded dried squid as a savoury swizzle stick. Kampai!
Good to meet more of the people from the OPENharvest project too. Too bad we had to leave before the mariachi singer arrived...
Thanks to everyone at the OPENharvest project who laid it on — especially Ichi-Fuji, Jerome and Masayo-san!
There's some nice footage of the event here!
