Gallery Shouzan [mentioned in my previous post] stands on the edge of the property in Kamakura that was once the residence and atelier of the yoga [as in 'Western painting'] artist Asai Kan'emon.
He moved here in 1966 and this was his work/living space until his death in 1983. Since then, the studio has been kept virtually untouched — and it still looks just the way it was when he was there. This is a photo of a photo, showing him at his easel...
...and this is the space as it is now — with his knitted wool jacket just as he left it.
The horse you can see in the background of the photo is still there in the studio. It was an image that cropped up in some of his works.
This is the book the above photo was taken from...
And here's another, earlier image of him, on the cover of Taiyo (The Sun) magazine.
Besides the horse and the toy merry-go-round/carousel, he also amassed an eclectic collection of artifacts ranging from old lacquer to tin toys...
Here's the inside of the atelier...
...and of the house itself — including a rather fine old tea room.
Kan'emon called his atelier Kan'un-an — literally "Leisure-clouds hermitage" (actually there are a number of possible readings/translations...)
Currently (this week only), the house is open — and some art works are for sale.
There's more information (in Japanese) about Asai Kan'emon here...
Here's a Google Maps link...
