Are these the best-dressed open-face sandwiches in town?
Just two of the beautifully sculpted creations produced by chef Thilak Basnayaka at Koz Cafe in Tomigaya, close to Yoyogi-Koen Station, just minutes away from the NHK end of the park.
Inside and out it's got a very modern Scandinavian feel, too, with plenty of shelves filled with design books and stylish — but comfortable — pine wood furniture.
In one corner there's a computer monitor playing a ceaseless loop of images of the beautifully arranged platters that Thilak has put together for his catering service.
Since last month, Koz Cafe has started serving brunch at weekends. There's only one outdoor table, though — and there's likely to be hot competition now the weather is approaching absolutely perfect.
As I wrote in my Japan Times column last week, you can't miss that slate-blue flower-patterned exterior.
Here's a map link...
PS: If you're looking for something rather more upmarket with a similar frame of culinary reference, here's my post on another primo Scandinavian lunch spot: Aquavit.
UPDATE (June 2011): Unfortunately Koz Cafe only lasted a year. Now it's gone.
UPDATE (May 2012): And now in its place we have the excellent Fuglen
And finally, because it's not a very good photo, I'm putting this last image right down the bottom... the curry-rice (with chicken). As I wrote, it's as much Japanese in inspiration as Sri Lankan — pretty good nonetheless.
