The truly excellent Cinema Amigo is currently showing Soul Power, the movie of the amazing soul/r&b concert held in Kinshasa, Zaire, in 1974 (originally it was supposed to happen on the same weekend as the Ali/Foreman Rumble in the Jungle, but the fight got postponed). The Spinners and Bill Withers were good. But the clear stars of the show were Miriam (Mama Afrika) Makeba and James (sorry, Mister) Brown.
But the real showstoppers were Celia Cruz and the Fania All Stars. And no doubt it was that Latin/Spanish connection that inspired the people at Cinema Amigo to bring in a young chef to put together some very acceptable tapas, to mark the first screening of the movie last night.
Besides being a bar, movie club and cool hang-out space, Cinema Amigo also serves light lunches and operates a morning vegetable market once a week.
It also organized the Zushi Beach outdoor film festival in May, which I blogged about here...
Here's the link to Cinema Amigo; details of movies etc are on their blog here...
