All set to go on the N'EX to Narita...
A tinnie of Espresso Tea to keep me awake...
...and a nice g+t to knock me out once I'm on board.
The freebie in-flight pretzels are alright, but I prefer to bring my own nibbles with me.
One of my favourites: Almond shards and kozakana, crunchy little whitebait-type fish with a salty-sweet glaze.
I picked up this little packet earlier at Natural Lawson.
Besides the nice contrast of tastes and textures, this has really got to be good for you. I think of it as a trail mix for the sky...
The inflight meal: my last taste of Japan for a couple of weeks. It was definitely enhanced by the glass of "special water" that was smuggled back to me from the Upper Class cabin by an obliging flight attendant. She didn't reveal the name and provenance of this brew but it was definitely a junmai-ginjo, and probably from Yamagata. Which merely narrows down the field to only a few hundred possible options...
Virgin Atlantic calls its Japanese meal the Shokado Bento, because it comes in the kind of compartmentalized lacquer (-look) box attributed to Shokado Shojo [ 松花堂昭乗 ], a Shinto-Shingon Buddhist priest, painter, poet and calligrapher from the 16-17th century.
It's a pretty acceptable nibble — so why am I always tempted to call it the Shokudo (= "company canteen") bento?
